Freed Weininger

Translation by Jonah Lubin

INTRODUCTION

Freed Weininger (1915 – 1988) was a painter, poet and political activist. This poem is taken from his 1974 collection In groysn droysn, which was composed in America and published in Israel and explored themes ranging from resistance to the Vietnam War to psychedelic explorations of the cosmos.

Alef

with astronaut
begins the new alphabet
in the text of time,
and not like as it was
with ‘elohim.
The universe is old.
I hear the letters,
the alterity
the voice
of eternity.
it’s freezing cold,
and my fingers,
frost-bitten,
freeze,
while I hold
on to the tail
of the rocket
in the unending distance.

Beys

I blunder
around
in the billions
bemattered.
No sign of
“in the beginning”.
The invisible blue hills
become blurred with fear
and bit by bit
with my consciousness.

Giml

How lonely,
God,
you float around
You can no longer
recognize the galaxies.
Give me your hand.
We are both vagabonds
in the garden
of groundless
grounds.

Dalet

in desolate emptiness
there’s
no here
no there.
A poet
finds no place at all
in the anywhere.
I still seek
a somewhere
and wander around
in the unendingly big
out-there…
and all that I feel inside,
disperses now thinly,
becomes thin-side.

hey

once I used to
notice the high heavens
and dream:
how good it would be
to hold guard
over the heights
with a song of hallelujah.
Now I chase after
the light of twilight…
just another of
those also-mights.

Vov

On the distant wanderway
where will you want to wind up?
In the widest expanse,
on every invisible tree,
in the emptiness
winter away
whitened stars
like old maids
who wait
and wither.
Will you be able to tear their
woe from the tree,
and plant it somewhere in the meadows
Lovingly…
So that they bloom
in wonder?
Will you?

וועגן אויסלײג פֿון שטערן;

Zayen

A storm
in the zodiac,
even in the zone of the heavens
those seven,
where I chose
the stars,
found
the suns,
and still with a song.
Now they sin there
on the side streets,
like soldiers and whores
those same stars,
those same suns.
A red lantern
hangs above the cosmic gates.
The milky-way’s milk
turns sour.

Khes

I become friendly with dreams
with darkness.
From my senses
suddenly grows
a tree of marvels.
I see the stars,
recognize their order.
I see planets,
that used to run
like children to kheder
to learn khumesh.
It’s become emptier.
The space of distance
and every meadow
on my journey
will fade
into darkness…
Because I can’t find
the Rebbe.

Tes

Angels at the gate
with trumpets and cymbals
they toll
and blast
and their welcoming is for me
the first yiddish poet
in the great distance
who on a whim decided to be
a cosmic tourist.
Suddenly at the gate,
in a blue moon
an ancient author
appears.
He reaches me
his hand,
and in his eyes
flares the fire
of suns…
happy
that I have found the way
here.
I take his hand,
and hold it long in mine.
But it seems that
even the old author
is eager to hear,
what I think now
about the layout of the stars.
If the eternal hand
has talent.

Yud

It’s just so easy
to fall into despair.
The emptiness
in the distance of space,
is a sea
without a jetty.
So why are they rushing,
the astronauts,
the cosmonauts,
in in an idle race,
since regardless
none of the giants
will ever make it
to the bottom
of the creator’s
cosmic caprices.
So what am I doing here
in the distance?
Driven by the anxiety-jet
the truly Jewish rocket?!
Do I have a choice?
In my years
I am just
juvenile,
jejune,
a joker to some…
a Jew
who does not grow tired,
because in the age of astronauts,
I fly away
on the wing of song.

kaf

alone, up high.
I race further and further
driven by some sort of charm,
a strength.
Sometimes it churns
like a galaxy-star-chasm
my head.
But I don’t look down.
I am tired of wars.
Of north –
of south Vietnam…
call me a Cham
if you want,
I don’t want to get mixed up
in Laos.
I have already bought
in the cosmic storm clouds
a cottage in chaos.
I keep watch over stars.
They look up close
like chimeras.
I know
that here in the vast distance,
in chaos
a Yiddish,
peaceable,
poet
will live through challenging times.
But who cares?
Regardless, here I can
write in peace
my lunar-cat chronicals.

Lamed

Onto the distant lawn,
into the sphere labyrinth,
I let myself go further
and further.
I lunge and leap,
and don’t even ask
the luminescent lunar-cat,
if there is
such a thing
as poetic logic.
Here in the lawn of lights
where day is night
and night lasts days…
And where the previous landscape
has been transformed
into a strange star valley…
of lapis-lazuli blue,
it’s so good to be here.
The poem
yearns now for light
and love,
for that distant, distant lawn.

Mem

mom, shining in heaven.
Myriads of stars
now separate us.
For you I am probably
still
a wandering, confused child.
Forgive me
that I never became
a pious Jew…
That I went away
with flying meteors.
Because instead of
going to kheyder,
to the red, deaf melamed,
already then I was,
just my luck,
dreaming of Marusja –
my blonde muse
from a faraway brothel.
Mother mine,
the milky way here in space,
now unveils for me
a field
with snow-white gravestones.
You lie there somewhere
and you sleep,
and dream
that I
will not
be lost.

Nun

Here are stars:
eternal nomads…
they find no peace
and dream,
and fall
upon invisible barricades
I halt
at the nadir,
and throw a net –
my neshome,
as a fisherboy on a strand
throws his net.
I take
the falling stars
and take them with
on my wanderings.
In space,
of eternal,
of purple twilight.

Samekh

Is it a bad dream?
Ha-lu-ci-na-tion?
That I’m thinking
about leaving
the stratosphere?
Cold surrounds me here…
My disquiet is
a well without a bottom
and I
am against the status-quo.
In the cosmic system:
days and nights six.
Not even
a sign of sex.
Here I must turn
in a spiral
with our satellites…
And I’m in the middle.
It’s a scandal.
On the seventh day:
a siddur,
a Torah scroll…
and go
sing and praise
the Creator.
For me
it’s not such a nightmare.
It’s good for the Hasidim
from Satu Mare.
A bad dream
stops at some point too.
I wake up,
and venus
winks up at me.

Ayen

I am the first here
in the vast somewhere
In cosmically vast space
I don’t grow older.
The day is unending,
and I am still far
from an epilogue.
But something in me
could absolutely not
free itself
from that earth –
the first land,
and from earthy-cold
fear:
that the end is coming.
Here
in the infinity
of space
I remember
the agreement:
that dust
must again become dust
Should that be my answer –
my epitaph:
here lies someone
in the vast somewhere.
He loved
the old apple tree
which writhed in pain
until it was barely recognizable,
that stubborn one
who eked out a path
with weak hands
up straight walls –
and also the earth
which does not fear
an eclipse…
that that will be
its end
in the far-away

pey

Pegasus,
are you ready,
to show us
the extraordinary
and cosmic panoramas?
I want to be free
from my earthly-raw wounds
disquietly I tear
the bandages off.
I am tired
of dirty tricks,
of politics.
Come
let’s ask God,
if he wants to be
a real pilot…
If he wants to fly
in our ranks,
and put an end
to the parties.
Pegasus
from the high mountain –
the helicon,
have you gone
and between the constellations
become a symbol
for the poet –
a flag
I come to you,
Pegasus,
in protest.
My earth is petering out.
She’s pregnant with death
and pestilence.
Nevertheless show me
the cosmic panoramas.
A nightmare
joined with the spirit
and the images have
remained impure.

Fey

Father
show me the way
to the folk!
Why confuse my paths
in the great
out-there?
For whom do I put on
a cosmic shirt?
So that my flying-horse
will feel strange?
Do I seek the
Nirvana-fruits
on invisible trees,
in these heavenly gorges?
But I just reach
out to heaven
my hands…
so that the horizon,
the firmament,
should be free.
And then
the song will
once again
be revealed
in quiet
and peace.

Tsaddik

Disquiet tugs and tugs
me further on.
I hover around
in the twilight
of dispersed
separated heights.
A galaxy
spins around…
A star is lit,
a second sputters out,
a third stays frozen,
a sign for others,
a fourth shivers,
and splits somewhere
and will
never reach
its goal in the far-away.
Here in the twilight
of time and space,
nothing can tame me.
No fence,
no tongs.
No bridle.
I become a part,
a branch
of the invisible tree,
that has just bloomed,
glowed,
erupted.
Like birds
the stars
flew off into
the starredness.
And somewhere
it begins to howl,
the light,
the tidy lunar-cat.
My disquiet shivers
in her eyes.

Kuf

Quite early on
in the blooming of dawn
when senses arise
quickened
and clear
I hitched up the flying-horse’s harness
and set off on
on cosmic journeys.
But listen,
I barely recognize
the heavens
Signs hang
on star-walls
in space.
Just like in the states,
one can here in
the far-away find
deals:
on chewing gum
and bottles of Comet-Cola.
Come flying-horse,
and let us seek further.
It seems
my hangover is on my tail
I am tired
of floating around
always only in possibility
passing into if.
I barely recognize the heavens.
Comet-Cola has
also infiltrated
here
in cold space.

Reysh

My every sense
is in revolt.
The wheel’s
spun around,
an in the tumult
and chitchat
I turned with it,
not always
as I intended.
But I turn around,
and barely move
from my place –
Because as soon as I open
a narrow door
to distant space –
and my gaze absorbs
breadth and quiet,
something rips me away,
and it turns,
that wheel,
and turns
me back to the beginning.
All that’s in me
is in revolt.
I have paid enough
for surrounding cruelty
with tears,
and blood.
Oh, God,
how do I seek you now?
Be my friend,
my rebbe.
But curl the scroll
of earthly murder.
Just for a moment
let me
in the great out-there
feel quiet.

Shin

I stop for
a while
and somewhere
also
an astronaut stands still,
and must
go further by foot.
It’s shabbesdik,
quiet around.
It seems to me
I’m in the Mea Shearim
of the great out-there.
The stars wear shtraymlekh
and go to their shul.
They’re silent with me
and single me out.
How strange
I feel here:
“how uncanny.”
Moons wear shaytls,
bound
with starry tikhls
and everyone speaks in hushed tones.
They point –
and since I go around
with a bare head,
no-one winks from above
at me down below.
it’s quiet and dark
Nothing moves.
The shames of the far-away
suddenly calls to me
“turn on
the universe’s
chandelier.”
But I run away
even further into the far-away,
on the wing of
my jet of disquiet,
and it’s very good for me…
I don’t want to be
a shabbes-goy.

Tof

The new alef-beys
begins with astronaut,
and with “trench”
ends the poem
of the great out-there.
The cosmic journey
has halted
at “tav.”
In essence
he who sets off on a journey
must also be ready for the end.
So what am I getting at?
What have I searched for
there in the trench
of the great out-there?
I escaped
like from a cramped prison
and could not
observe how the earth
passed away
doubled over
in death throes.
I am off
on my star-studded journey
to save myself
from the hangman’s tree.
But he who runs,
runs only from himself…
and will, like a falling star,
pass into the trench.
That’s what I’m getting at:
I have searched
in the great out-there
the unknown
of stellar joys.
But on the earth
I have only now
found for my being
a tikn.
