On the Worth of Translations

Chaim Zhitlowsky

Translation by Joshua Price

INTRODUCTION

Having settled in America in 1908, Chaim Zhitlowsky (1865 – 1943), who soon established himself as a towering figure in Yiddish socialist Manhattan, brought with him a long history of ideological entanglements from revolutionary Russia: assimilationist populism, Palestine-centric Zionism, diaspora nationalism, Bundism, territorialism, and agrarianism. But what remained consistent across all of Zhitlowsky’s wanderings was his belief that solidarity with the international proletariat meant not the dissolution of the Jewish people, but rather the revitalization of national and cultural autonomy. The basis for this autonomy was the Yiddish language, spoken by Ashkenazic Jews of all religious and ideological persuasions. Zhitlowsky envisioned the flourishing of a secular Yiddish culture that could carry Jews forth into modernity.

In his 1910 essay, On the Worth of Translations,” Zhitlowsky saw in the translation of works of world literature a way to establish Yiddish as a kultur-shprakh, a language of culture as modern, capacious, and expressive as hegemonic European languages. And for Zhitlowsky, echoing the philosopher Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744 – 1803), linguistic vitality was synonymous with national legitimacy. Relatedly, translation was a means to attain bildung (education), to broaden the horizons of Yiddish readers in tandem with political mobilization, and to create the basis for a grand symbiosis of Jewish and European culture. Zhitlowsky’s theory of translation sought to reveal how the terms nationalism” and cosmopolitanism” were in fact mutually constitutive, no more so than in the case of the famed poet Yehoash’s translation of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha, for which Zhitlowsky’s essay originally served as an introduction.

If translating into Yiddish was an imagined (and often real) way of gaining prestige for the language and its culture(s), I hope that rendering Zhitlowsky out of Yiddish can be part of a continuing attempt — however lamentable its need — to rehabilitate the largely forgotten movement of secular Yiddishism.

The world of Yiddish literary criticism, 1 1 First printed as “Vegn dem vert fun iberzetsungen,” in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Dos lid fun hayavata, trans. Yehoash (New York: Farlag yehoyesh, 1910), iii-xxiv. Nachman Mayzel (New York: YKUF Farlag, 1951), 195-208. This translation would be greatly impoverished were it not for the valuable assistance of Peter Cole and the late Benjamin Harshav. which already includes such important figures as Baal-Makhshoves, 2 2 “The Thinker”; pseudonym of Yiddish literary critic Israel Isidor Elyashev (1873–1924). Sh. Niger, 3 3 Shmuel Niger (1883-1955), Yiddish literary critic. and Bal-Dimyen, 4 4 “Man of Imagination”; pseudonym of Nokhem Shtif (1879-1933) ‚Yiddish linguist, literary scholar, and political activist. still treats translations as though they were stepchildren of Yiddish literature. The Yiddish book market has recently been enriched with several valuable works created in Europe that are certainly not inferior to our native products; but this hasn’t inspired our critics to stop and turn their attention to the European creations.

Do our critics feel that their talents are limited and suffice only for analysis of our own impoverished culture? Certainly not. Whoever considers the criticism produced by Baal-Makhshoves or Sh. Niger would be forced to admit that they would, in fact, have something distinctive to say about Shakespeare or Goethe. I believe that the broad realm of world literature, rather than the still-narrow realm of purely Jewish creativity, would offer them a much greater opportunity to develop their critical talent. But they lock themselves up within our cramped four little corners, not because their wings are too short and cannot lift them to greater heights, but rather because the four corners are ours, because Jewish individuality is expressed in them, because love for one’s own people overtakes love for art in general.

Of course we have no right to reprimand them for this behavior. It’s the inevitable psychology of a generation that has had to struggle for the mere right to lead its own life, to create its own cultural property. For a farmer striking out for the first time into the wilderness, an unplaned log cabin built with his own hands is much more precious than a foreign marble palace. For a mother, every intelligible word uttered by her child is much more profound than all of King Solomon’s wisdom, and she tends to find genius in her child where an outsider finds only the signs of quite ordinary maturation. It is difficult, almost impossible, however, for the Yiddish writers of the current generation to adopt the perspective of the outsider. It’s not only natural “motherly love” that blinds us. We ought to be able to liberate ourselves from its charm, just as every intelligent human liberates himself when he wants or needs to take a serious look at his own virtues and faults. What blinds us is a struggle with an unjust enemy. The programmatic hatred towards Yiddish literature and its guardians, the refined impulse to put all of its products to the sword, provokes in us an overestimation of its worth. Our love for our own literature is no longer natural, but anxious, nervous, and blind. We can’t even begin to soberly assess the faults or the proper trajectory of Yiddish literature, since its opponents condemn it to Hades. We measure its growth, therefore, not according to its own true size, but according to the length of the rope required to bring it up again to the light of day. I speak here not about that embittered, bilious polemic recently issued by the pen of a significant Hebrew author who honors us from time to time by lowering himself from his Olympian heights to our meager little dwelling. 5 5 Zhitlowsky is not explicit about who this author is, though it could be Ahad Ha’am (1856–1927). It’s also possible he is just generalizing from the many anti-Yiddish polemics and polemicists active during this time known as the “war of languages.” This polemic has only emerged very recently, so it couldn’t have so deeply affected Yiddish literary criticism. It is no more than a symptom of a deeper attitude, prevalent for much longer among the Yiddish-hating intelligentsia—it is the pus of a wound, which has swelled little by little ever since the Yiddish language proudly demanded equality with, or even superiority over, its “master” (Hebrew). An atmosphere of hatred and jealousy has always surrounded the growth of Yiddish literature: the hatred of the assimilationist and the hatred of the Zionist—both have prevented us from being fair in our critical evaluations; both have induced our overexcitement and wild enthusiasm where more modest language would have served as a more effective instrument for the truth.

This same psychology of anxious, nervous, and blind devotion to our own creations in Yiddish inevitably shaped our evaluation of the worth and importance of translations into Yiddish. I know many people for whom the best translation of Goethe’s Faust, say, would be less exciting than a new sketch of Peretz or Sholem Asch. 6 6 Isaac Leib Peretz (1852–1915), towering figure in the world of Yiddish letters, was revered as one of the fathers of modern Yiddish literature and adopted by secular Yiddishists as a cultural hero. Sholem Asch (1880–1957), was at the time a young and up-and-coming Yiddish novelist and playwright. I must confess that I myself went through such a psychological phase (which now is far behind me), and it seems to me that it’s about time we render a sober judgment regarding the nature of this enthusiasm. I would like to pose the question as sharply as possible: What should please me more—a good, truly artistic Yiddish translation of Goethe’s Faust, or the collected works of . . . take your pick of the Yiddish writers?

I know that this question is one-dimensional, Talmudic, and sounds a little like the rabbis asking about the calf that fell from the roof—is it kosher? But the one-sided, casuistic “fell from the roof” is always the correct method when the issue at hand must be surgically separated from all the other attendant issues that obscure its true essence. 7 7 Heb. nafal min hagag. This appears in b. Šabb. 136a, in a discussion about the kashruth of a calf. This immediate context is less important, though—Zhitlowsky’s inclusion of the phrase is merely meant to characterize the question as analogous to the sometimes-absurd legalism of the rabbinic tradition, i.e., “And what happens when the calf falls from the roof or is devoured by a lion?”

So again: Let’s say that the angel Gabriel comes to me and says the following: “I currently have a single literary genius at my disposal. Would you like him to undertake a translation of Faust (and what a translation it will be!)? Or would you like him to write his own sketches and dramas, and we’ll eventually come to see the Collected Works of . . . take your pick of the Yiddish writers? Whatever you say is good as done.”

What would my answer be?

This is what we now must consider, and I believe that a preface to a classic European work is the appropriate place for such a consideration. 8 8 As will become apparent later, “European” is an essential term in Zhitlowsky’s argument that Yiddish, by the fact of its Europeanness, deserves, just as all other European languages do, to have a vernacular edition of the pan-European corpus.

Every time an oppressed people awakens from its historical slumber and undertakes to build a culture of its own in a language which used to be spoken by the rabble, the young national progressive 9 9 Zhitlowsky operates with the assumption that “progressive” has something to do with internationalist solidarity as opposed to chauvinist nationalism. intelligentsia seeks to justify itself before progressive thought and prove beyond all doubts 10 10 Heb. otot u-moftim, referring to the mechanics of the Exodus from Egypt. Also used more broadly in Yiddish as “convincing arguments.” that it has a right to eat at its own table. 11 11Tsu makhn a shabes far zikh, Yiddish idiom with literal meaning “to make a Sabbath for oneself.” In this context, Zhitlowsky uses the phrase to mean “to set forth a nationalist cultural program.”

It’s possible that the search for justifications (heteyrim) for an independent national development is futile. A nation is an end in itself, just like an individual person. But even the individual sometimes contemplates the meaning of life and often concludes that toyv loy haodom sheloy nivro mishenivro: better to not have been born in the world. 12 12 A paraphrase of a similar phrase in b. ͑Erub. 13b. Why shouldn’t the same question be asked regarding the life of nations? Well, for a people already leading its own cultural life, there are no questions. But for a people attempting to resuscitate itself with so much strained effort—is it unreasonable for this people to consider the point of these futile efforts, of the new struggle and of the new sacrifice demanded of each individual? If we recall the whole set of problems encountered by humanity as a result of its being torn apart into individual nations, it’s hardly surprising to us that the progressive national intelligentsia feels obligated to get a “seal of approval” (heksher) from progressive thought for its own national-cultural existence.

I know that the search for the seal of approval is itself already a sign of a maturing life-force (lebns-energye), of a newly-awakened will to an independent existence; that the “first mover” is, in this as in all cases, emotion, and that the logic of the seal of approval is nothing more than the sort of logic in which thought is accommodated to emotion and harmoniously reconciled with it. But such is the nature of human reason (seykhl). Reason wants to pose as the boss and show that the emotions are products of the rationalist mind, and not that reason is merely the sworn messenger of emotion. And the same tendency also holds true when it comes to the national question, and maybe even more so here than anywhere else, since the nationalist emotion is perhaps the strongest passion of human history.

It would therefore be very interesting to examine all the national-progressive “justifications” that have been offered until now, in order to tease out, by means of psychoanalysis, those blind national feelings that lie at their core. Alas, this isn’t within the scope of a preface. Here I must also decline to present at length all those arguments of national-progressive thought that have been offered until now, even though almost all of them have a direct connection to our subject. It will be sufficient for my goal to present only the two foundational arguments that have been deployed by the progressive-national intelligentsia whenever they have attempted to harmonize the desire for their own culture with the demands of general human progress.

One argument was for the original development of one’s own national culture (folks-kultur). The other argument was for the necessity of attracting the masses to general human progress. The first sounds more nationalistic; the second, more cosmopolitan.

The first argument claims that general human culture is a garden of various national cultures, all of which express, in their own language and form, the same general human idea. The richer the individual national cultures, the richer the general human garden. And therefore, when we see that a new culture is emerging, this ought to produce a feeling of joy, since a new atmosphere is being created in which the rays of human civilization will extend in new directions and take on new, hitherto unseen colors.

The second argument is more democratic and utilitarian. The history of oppressed peoples in the nineteenth century proves that the masses can be elevated to a higher cultural level only when the entire intelligentsia takes on such a project. The intelligentsia casts the spiritual treasure of humanity into a language accessible to the entire people and into forms appropriate to the various levels of education (bildung) of its individual classes. True, this pedagogic project cannot remain purely passive and mechanical. Even its basest and most popular forms must awaken new, more or less original, creative powers that incorporate a certain individual nuance into the material at hand. And even more so when the goal is to raise the level of education in art and science (visnshaft)! In these realms, the people, if it has a spark of genius, must produce its own great talents, who will have to fuse together all of human culture in their own way and cast this culture into independent national forms. But the main point here is not original cultural development. This is an incidental byproduct. The main goal is the creation of a general human culture for all classes of the nation.

If we were to apply these two perspectives to the question: translation or our own creations—it appears that the question can easily be answered; all that matters is the perspective from which the question is approached.

If our goal is the development of original culture, then our own creations take precedence. We simply cannot expect, however, that the people will immediately produce Goethes and Tolstoys, Darwins and Newtons; we ought to be satisfied with products of a lesser caliber. Under ideal conditions, the national culture will come to reach that height which the nation is naturally capable of reaching. From this standpoint, translations can accomplish very little. On the contrary, they can even hurt. What does humanity gain when Goethe’s Faust exists in a Yiddish version? Humanity’s cultural treasure is not enriched by one cent, while Peretz’s story “Between Two Mountains” adds something, however small, to the general human cultural treasure. 13 13 “Tvishn tsvey berg.” Short story published in the 1901 volume, Khsidish, of Peretz’s neo-Hasidic tales. Faust, and more generally the foreign, can impede this process, since it imposes a sharply-pronounced standard of foreign genius upon the young, still immature creative force; it pushes this creative force into foreign molds and thus impedes original development. One young Yiddish author consequently demanded that we should (for a brief time) entirely sever connections both with the Hebrew past and with the European present, and try to begin growing out of ourselves, until our creative powers grow strong enough to prevent anything foreign from tainting our originality.

We arrive at an entirely different answer by adopting the perspective that calls for general human culture to be brought to the people. Then we must evaluate the works not according to their originality, but according to the educational content (bildungs-inhalt) they supply to the people’s soul, according to their worth for us at home. Here there’s no need to ask whether we created the work. Everything that humanity created, it created for humanity, and we are a part of it. Goethe’s Faust is our Faust, and if we lack it, we ought to exert all efforts to acquire it rather than create something inferior.

An interesting paradox emerges in this argumentation: The more nationalistic argument for original development takes on a more cosmopolitan tone, while the adherents of “general human” culture construct a stiflingly nationalistic egoism. Indeed: original development is deemed original only through comparison to the products of other cultures. And its value is not contained in the fact it expresses our own “I,” since this very own “I” might be a twin of another national soul, and then, it will not—even in its absolute “freedom”—contain a single worthy or distinctive characteristic. And for whom does originality have value? Surely not for the self, since as long as I live in myself and for myself, my originality can never be conscious. Originality has value only for that portion of humanity outside of our national orbit, since it is through originality that humanity’s treasure is enriched with new cultural products that would otherwise not have been created. The reverse is also true, since the “attractor” (tsutsier), who desires that general progress should dominate the life of his own people, hardly cares about the enrichment of humanity by production of original works from within his nation. What’s important for him is merely the high cultural level among his own people (in der heym), regardless of how this cultural level is evaluated from the outside, and regardless of its standing in the general human cultural treasure.

Any serious student of the national question knows the origin of this paradox and what its true character is: the two perspectives about which we are speaking are essentially the expression of two sorts of national interests. These are the interests of national independence (zelbstshtendikayt), which wants, above all, to acquire independent cultural property, regardless of what this property consists of, and the interest of national variety (farsheydnkayt), where every nation is considered as a member of humanity and has its own character and its own significance. These two types of interests can only be distinguished in the realm of abstract logic. In reality, they are always braided together and rest on the fundamental idea that national development is a part of general human development. It is therefore no surprise that they are constantly overlapping; whatever “nationalism” or “cosmopolitanism” takes into its camp, the other soon takes back. However interwoven they are, however difficult it is to distinguish between them in life, the question must be answered without equivocation: What is more important for us: independence or originality? A high cultural level, or our “own word,” even when it is still weak and insignificant?

I must confess that it’s difficult for me to find an absolutely certain criterion with which we can answer this question objectively. I can only speak for myself and for those who share my perspective regarding the national cultural question. That the development of the Jewish people should be unique is certainly important to us, and for me at least, the entire “justification” (heter), the entire point of our own national existence lies in those new products that a talented people must produce as soon as its own cultural atmosphere is created. But however dear this is to me, what takes first priority is the elevation of the entire people to a higher cultural level across all social classes, even though a single cultural level can be reached only very gradually. So first—we should strive for independence and a culture rich in content! Only then should we worry about this culture’s individuality! Such individuality is bound to emerge in a people that has led a unique historical life for several thousand years and has therefore transferred by inheritance from generation to generation a certain physical and spiritual apparatus, a certain system of nerves and marrow that is bound to put its stamp on all the inputs it receives.

As for those nations that are only now starting out on their historical path, that have not yet demonstrated what they are capable of, one may still wonder how long it will take for them to develop—in their apparatus of marrow and nerves—interesting, unique traits which will lead to interesting, unique products. But such doubts can have no place among the Jewish intelligentsia, which is now seeking to create a new cultural atmosphere in the Yiddish language. The particular and unique Jewish apparatus of marrow and nerves is already fully formed, and it has already presented a wealth of examples of its power and beauty both in Hebrew creations for itself at home and in European creations for outsiders. The question of an original independent culture in Yiddish depends, therefore, not on the sum total and the significance of those works already created in Yiddish. Even if we were today still at the level of “Tsene-rene 14 14 “Go out and see” from Song of Songs 3:11. It is the title of Yankev ben Yitskhok Ashkenazi of Janów’s half-translation, half-commentary of weekly Sabbath readings from the Torah and Prophets. The first extant edition is from 1622, with hundreds following in the next few centuries. Geared mainly, though not exclusively, toward women, it was the all-time Yiddish “best seller” and is sometimes viewed romantically as the essence of premodern Yiddish literature’s folksiness. and the folks-mayselekh, 15 15 “Folk stories,” chapbooks of early modern Yiddish literature (seventeenth century onward) typically inscribed within some religious framework. we would have the same right to aspire to our own rich cultural independence in our national language (folks-shprakh) just like now, since there was never any obstacle for us with regard to creative strengths. The question would be (and the question remains to this day), whether Yiddish, as a language, is capable of conveying the entire richness of modern culture, of raising the level of our bildung to that of all other educated and civilized peoples. This question, however, can be much more easily addressed through translations than through our own creations.

Who can possibly know how many ideas and images, moods and nuances of today’s Yiddish writer are now suppressed because the language is not yet able to articulate everything that he perceives in his soul? I know that it’s not the language itself which is guilty in this matter, but, firstly, the language’s unrealized potential, and secondly—to an even stronger degree—the fact that we’re so unfamiliar with it. I have always considered myself an expert in Yiddish styles, but when I read an article by our young linguistic virtuoso, Sh. Niger, I am amazed by the bubbling cauldron of new expressions and word forms that constantly appear in all of his better pieces. But who can guarantee that his inner world of ideas is not richer still in half- and quarter-tones, for which even he cannot, as of now, find the precise Yiddish word?

Translations—true, good, purely Yiddish translations from the richest works of humanity—would at once clear away the question regarding Yiddish’s linguistic poverty and completely spare the artist the effort that he must now apply in order to create or discover the necessary Yiddish expression. The language’s labor pains could be wholly transferred over to the translator, and if the angel Gabriel in fact presented me with the choice—either translations, or our own creations on their current level, I would not hesitate for a moment and would confidently decree: “Translations!”

And I would come to the same conclusion for an even more important reason. General human culture means for me—the European cultural realm. This is humanity, the highest rung of its development, and the not hundreds of millions who remain outside of it and behind it. A people who wants to live with humanity, among humanity, must first seek to embrace all of humanity’s treasures, the entire enormous wealth that humanity has created since Homer until today; not its thousands of small spirits, but its geniuses and luminaries. This does not mean that a people should retreat from everything that it has created at home—especially not the Jewish people, who have contributed so much to the treasure of European culture. It does mean, however, that the domestic (heymishe) must be harmonized with the new treasure, that Europeanism—as I refer to it—must become the basis of a new original creativity and that only those elements of the domestic treasure that do not oppose Europeanism should continue to develop. Until this idea enters into our flesh-and-blood, all our efforts are for naught: a new combination of Asiatic cultures is not worthy of seeing the light of day. Our “pedigree, which extends as far back as the pyramids,” has such an enormous worth only because of the fact that we were, as Heine profoundly remarked, “a piece of Europe cast into Asia.” 16 16 Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), German-Jewish writer. The source of this quotation is unknown. Thanks to the fact that we were “a piece of Europe,” we were able to affect the developmental process of the human spirit and the European spirit was able to affect us so strongly. We are Europeans, and I say good riddance to that which runs counter to our Europeanism! 17 17 Orig. “geyn lazozl,” “go to Azazel.” Refers to some goat-like creature mentioned in Leviticus 16 meant to carry away the sins of the Jews on Yom Kippur. Zhitlowsky uses this very rich metaphor to underscore how intensely he wants Jewish and Yiddish culture to be wiped clean of anything not “European.” Zhitlowsky’s unabashed Eurocentrism comes through in this paragraph—both in regard to what is worth saving in Jewish culture and what is worth translating from “world literature” (still a notoriously fraught term today). In light of the advancements made by postcolonial studies in giving voice to long-oppressed, long-silenced cultures, modern readers may justifiably bristle at Zhitlowsky’s “Europeanism.” Without apologizing for it and certainly without defending it, we should acknowledge that such a narrow view of cultural production was a product of its time and place. Even if our critique of historically Eurocentric approaches to (Jewish) translation may start with an arraignment of Zhitlowsky, he is hardly alone in his use of such discourse.

Yiddish culture ought to evolve in constant contact with “European” creations, by constantly taking from them and giving to them. But for this, our culture must first reach a European level and obtain that which evolved humanity already possesses. But this can be achieved only through translations. Had we applied our energy to good translations for the past twenty-five years, rather than squeezing out of our cultural poverty the little “originality” that we now possess, we would indeed already be much further along in our original creations than we are now.

I placed my pen down and let the best creations of Yiddish literature trot by in my mind, and I started to feel a little grief. Why? Is it easy for me to resign myself to the thought that these very creations would have remained unwritten at the expense of the translation project? No, of course not. And it might not be entirely fair to ask why the past did not produce any good translations at the expense of the other things (Oy! There are so many!). I’m comforted, however, by the idea that no theory can erase that which is already written, that no theory in the world can stop the flow of the current of our own creations. And what I can reasonably and fairly expect from a theory is not the interruption of the current of Yiddish literature, but its enrichment through a new influx of good, competent translations. This very project has already begun, many have already earned a good name in this realm, and we can only be enthused when we see that even an author of Yehoash’s rank has of late done so much for translation into Yiddish without sacrificing his own literary output. 18 18 Yehoash is the pen name of Solomon Blumgarten (1870–1927), prolific Yiddish poet and translator. He is the translator of Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha, for which Zhitlowsky’s essay is the preface. He is most famous for his masterful, now canonical, modern Yiddish translation of the Old Testament.

Yehoash has chosen Longfellow’s poem Hiawatha from European literature (the reader will understand that we consider America a spiritual part of Europe). Why this work of all works? The poet is not obligated to answer this. It is simply Longfellow’s luck that he has been translated into Yiddish! Every other major work deserves the same treatment. Or rather: The Jewish people ought to possess every other major work as a part of its literature.

But if we were ask which sort of poetry Yiddish literature needs most, it would be difficult to choose something better than Hiawatha.

We, a people of cities and towns, lack nature and a love of nature. Our spiritual treasure does not yet include those moods evoked by the forest and the field, by mountain and water. We lack the “smell of the field,” 19 19 Genesis 27:27. “ . . . And [Isaac] smelled the smell of [Jacob’s] raiment, and blessed him, and said: See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord hath blessed.” and it is precisely Longfellow’s poetry that is so richly suffused with the air of field and forest, with the spirit of mountains and water.

And forgive me when I say that we also lack this: the ability to identify with the life, emotions, and imagination of another people. In our rational lives we are the most cosmopolitan people in the world. But in our emotional lives, the troubles of exile have made our souls so cramped that we have long forgotten the “ve-ahavtem es ha-ger” 20 20 Deuteronomy 10:19. “ki atem yedatem es nefesh ha-ger 21 21 Exodus 23:9. (and love the foreigner, since you understand the foreigner’s soul). We no longer understand the soul of the gentile, and our entire cultural atmosphere is filled with so much chauvinism, such petty hatred of the Other, that soon, no air will remain . . . and precisely from the progressive nationalists, precisely from those who do not let this hymn issue from their lips—“Proletarians of all peoples, unite”—precisely from them, you often hear talk that, I swear, conjures the spirit of the publisher of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. . . . 22 22 Pavel Krushevan (1860-1909). This arises not from a shortage of theoretical bildung. This is a rawness of emotion, which can be refined not by theories and sermons (muser), but only by general human poetry. The poetry of a foreign people teaches us to empathize with the foreigner, to rejoice and to suffer with him. In this sense, Longfellow’s Hiawatha is one of the worthiest products of European literature. Hiawatha is in fact a collection of legends created by the wild Indian tribes of North America. The legends are, in part, natural myths—supernatural stories meant to explain this or that natural phenomenon; and in part they are cultural myths, explanations of those miracles encountered by primitive man in his own social life, miracles whose origin, even in his wisdom and his perfection, he cannot explain. The legend of Mondamin, the yellow-and-green-clad young man, with “the soft and gold tresses,” whom Hiawatha conquered, belongs to this sort of cultural legend. Mondamin is nothing other than the maize that gave the Indians the possibility to live from more than hunting.

Longfellow grouped all these legends around the central figure of Indian epic, the mythic hero Hiawatha. Hiawatha is therefore not an individual hero; he is the entire Indian people, the personification of all the finer aspects of its character and its life. He is the ideal of the people and represents everything that the people considers holy and precious.

In understanding the psyche of the entire Indian people, in sympathizing with its troubles and suffering, since they are essentially the same troubles and pains that afflict all people everywhere, the emotional aspect of national estrangement, the hateful animosity between the national “I” and the national “you,” begins to vanish. In its place emerges a feeling of solidarity, which will finally tie all peoples together into one brotherly family, into one free alliance of peoples (felker-bund), where each nation can, without impediment, cultivate everything that grows within its soul and help every other nation in the shared progress of all humanity.

In the struggle for our own national existence, in the polemic against the cosmopolitanist, we often forget the demands of brotherly national love (felker-libe), the soul of our entire progressive belief, the “she is thy life” of our entire ideal. 23 23 Proverbs 4:13, “Take fast hold of instruction, let her not go; keep her, for she is thy life.” Works like Hiawatha revitalize this soul of pure “humanism,” this refined love for the human, a love that is, in Longfellow’s work, so harmoniously fused with a love of nature.
