“A Word from the Editors”

Melekh Ravitsh and Moyshe Rosenberg

Translation by Tamara Gleason Freidberg and Arturo Kerbel

INTRODUCTION

The itinerant Yiddish writer and cultural activist Melekh Ravitsh found himself in Mexico in the early 1940s where he contributed to the Yiddish newspaper Der Weg, edited by Moyshe Rosenberg. Meanwhile, as the Nazis intensified their destruction of Europe and the gates to the US closed, rescue organizations worked exhaustively with local Jewish communities across Latin America in a quest to get visas for Jews stranded in Europe. Aware of this scenario, and mourning the imminent destruction of European Jewry, Ravitsh and Rosenberg felt compelled to call writers across the Americas to publish a journal that would inform and help develop a joint cultural program. The resulting anthology, Der kontinent (The Continent, 1941), is unique not only because of its articles about Jewish communities far from the dominant centers, but also due to their approach of crossing national borders. Joshua Hochstein’s Economical and Social Trends in present Latin America”, Abraham Golomb The Jewish People and its Literature”, and Melekh Ravitsh’s On the lack of a program and Inter-American continental, reciprocal ignorance” are some titles to be found in the contents.

The essay presented below stands out due to the fact that, beyond presenting a strategy to recruit writers from different countries, it poses issues that are relevant to our era of globalization and ruminates on the possibility of transnational cooperation and solidarity. For further background on this journal, see this accompanying essay.

The idea to publish a Yiddish periodical entitled Der Kontinent (“The Continent”), a periodical that aims to cater to Jewish interests on the American continent, came to us from the deep belief that just as the continent now has a mission in the world, the Jews of the Americas have a mission within world Jewry.

For Rosh Hashanah 1940 we published a brochure for the planned periodical and distributed it by mail. The responses were various. Some understood us well. Jacob Leszcynski stated: you have taken the pulse of the historical moment and you will hopefully carry out the mission that such a journal set itself. Sh. Niger wrote in a letter: I really like the idea and I also think that Mexico is the right place for such an enterprise. But we have also been misunderstood. In his article “What Jews Are Capable of Doing” (“Vos yidn kenen”), published in “Tog,” the prominent Shmuel Roznfeld claimed that we have the ambition to become a pan-American Yiddish center, even though nobody had called on us to do that task. In reality, we never mentioned any center in the brochure. We spoke of the natural bridge that Mexico represents on a continental scale, because Mexico is located geographically in the North, although it belongs culturally to the Latin part, that is, the Southern part of the continent.

For months we have made serious efforts to publish a monthly periodical. With great patience we corresponded with a great variety of Jews from all 21 republics from Pan-America, including Canada and the colonies, but we were unable to reach all American countries. Nevertheless, we made contact with three quarters of them and received answers. We were in touch with several dozen writers and requested articles according to our plan. We should add, however, that we did not entirely succeed in putting together a periodical entirely in keeping with our plan, which would serve the interests of American Jews in the broadest sense of the word, and above all—inform, inform, inform. Because the mutual ignorance that Jews have of one another on this continent is considerable.

After five months of tireless work, we have become convinced that either the time has not come for a Yiddish journal such as we imagined, or that we are not the right people to create it, or that Mexico is not the right place for it after all. In the meantime, we have decided to publish sporadic anthologies under the title Der Kontinent. These anthologies will pursue the same goals as the periodical was meant to pursue and will prepare the ground for such a journal in the future.

The book you hold in your hands, dear reader, is indeed the first volume of such an anthology. Further volumes will be published later under the same title and, hopefully, with more information and with a wider circle of collaborators.

The contents of this anthology are divided into three main parts. General articles (mainly about American-Jewish topics), discussion articles, and letters. More than half of the countries on the continent are represented in this section. We also include some belles-lettres—poems—which we have selected on purely aesthetic grounds. Our anthologies are literary and artistic only on the tertiary level. Primarily, our task is to inform (which is actually the most difficult task); secondarily, to discuss the urgent Jewish problems in the Americas (which will sooner or later become the problems of world Jewry); only in the third place do we want to offer literature. Naturally, the poem by Jacob Glantz is appropriate for this anthology due to its content. The other poems could have been published in any other periodical. The poems serve to cheer the reader and to lend the overall volume a certain rhythm.

Preaching American-Jewish chauvinism or local patriotism could not be further from the intention behind our anthologies. We emphasize again: just as it is clear for the whole world that it will not be redeemed without the assistance of America [the continent], it is already clear for the whole Jewish world that it will not be redeemed without the help of American Jewry. The better American Jewry comes to understand itself, and therefore its mission, the healthier it will be for world Jewry. We believe in Jewish emigration from Europe, and we believe in the possibility of a mass Jewish migration overseas, particularly to the American continent. This migration will not only save European Jewry, but also American Jewry, and thus world Jewry . . .

We will continue work on theses anthologies, which we consider preparation for the periodical of the same name. We plan to transform “The Continent” into an annual yearbook. We also plan: to publish these yearbooks in Spanish as well.
But those are things which we will decide later, after the first issue appears and we receive outside feedback.
