My friends, my fellows: NOTHING is the topic of everything that follows. Yes, yes, today the theme we’re touching is, well, a whole lot of nothing.

Nothing.

Nitchevo.

Gurnisht.

An absolute nullity.

And how, you may ask, did I land on the topic of Nothing? Plain and simple. Listen, if you would, just listen:

This week I thought and I pondered and I ruminated, “What should I broadcast over the radio this Friday night?” I thought, and I thought, and well, I thought of nought.

I found myself in a terrible dilemma. I tried to hit upon some interesting question, but… “Nie ma!” as they say in Polish. Well, go fish. Not a thing to say, may the Devil take me away!

I squeezed my brain, I strained, rhymed with the last of my strength. I asked my last bit of mind, and well… it declined. I was in trouble something awful! You hear me? And so? I decided. There! That’s that!

I did not want to travel to Philadelphia. “But that’s all right,” I thought to myself. “It won’t be a disaster if you don’t. Philadelphia has been getting along without you just fine, and it’ll continue getting along right down the line, even if this Friday you do not arrive! So take some time to relax from your rhymes.”

When, suddenly, are you listening? Suddenly, an idea! An idea comes to me, in a flash! And I ask myself, I ask, “Well why not? NOTHING itself—couldn’t that be the topic? Cover everything about nothing, don’t be so myopic! Yes! Do NOTHING, but in lissome verse — it could interest the listeners!”

And so, my friends, my fellows, NOTHING is the topic of everything that follows.

Nothing. Nothing! The whole world is nothing! They say friendship is nothing, too. Money? Also nothing. What are you allowed to do? Nothing. And what dare you do? Nothing. Years, days. Golly, it’s all nothing with nothing.

Oy, all of life is but one big nothing. Nothing without end! So said Ecclesiastes, the Philosopher of Nothing! We all remember distinctly, how our teacher in cheder would drill us succinctly:

“Translate, my laddies, from the second verse of Ecclesiastes:

(this and the following lines done in the typical singsong of Torah study):

Haveyl.’”

“Nothing!”

“‘Havulim.’”

“Nothing!”

“‘Umar.’”

“Said.”

“‘Koheyles.’”

“Nothing…?”

“‘Haveyl.’”

“Nothing.”

“‘Havulim.’”

“Absolutely nothing!”

“‘Hakl.’”

“Everything.”

“‘Hovel.’”

“Nothing.”

And so, in a word, to make a long story short, what do all our lives result in? Nuttin’ wit’ nuttin’! And who said so? Ho! It was he, the wisest of men, who knew everything and every… woman—who had, it is said, all the days of his life, so many a wife—ladies in the thousand, assorted wives by the dozen!

And what, my friends, did King Solomon have to say about these wives? Nothing. He said he had found one decent man among a thousand, “but a woman among all those have I not found.” 1Not a one! He had nothing! Horse-snot! Not a nice word for any of ’em, of course not!

Or take world politics, for instance. Since the war ended, take a good look around, friends, where do we stand? On what do we stand? On nothing, you understand? And things ain’t budging.

And what of the dream for a lasting peace? For now—nothing.

And what of that fellow whose mind with Hitler’s goes in unison, the grand Mufti of Jerusalem? You can hear everyone murmur, he’s a nothing, a murderer, he’s just like his buddy, is the Mufti, with the funny mustache and hair-tufting. And what’s gonna come of it? Nothing. Nothing! Not a single admonishment! But his threats don’t astonish us. Just as with that other one, the Berliner, dear friends, he’ll get his in the end, and he’ll be reduced to… nothing.

But hush! While we’re looking at the world today, what value does a dollar have now, would you say? Huh? Nothing! Nothing, my dears! When you go to the butcher, what do you get for a dollar? Well, upon my soul! What amounts to a hole! That is, a whole lotta’ nothing! Ya want veal cuts? Ya’ get peanuts!

Take the atom, for example. Such blessings it could bring to the world, such a balm. And what do they make from it? A bomb. But by all means, go and explain to me what the size of an atom is. What will I tell you? Its size is… nothing. And if they go on ahead, and atom bombs start exploding over our heads, what will become of us, I ask you aloud, and of everything around? There won’t be an atom left of this whole mechanization called civilization. And that’s what I say!

It’ll all be just nothing. An egg with the yolk blown away.

But honestly. Take today’s girls. Besides the “New Look,” what do they wear? Nothing. And the boys, what do they own? Well, I swear! Nothing. And the women, at suppertime, what do they prepare? Nothing, with a can-opener. And the men, what have they to declare? Men have nothing to say. Hush! Not a word! Nooooothing.

Or take the folks on the radio, the ones cajoling and cheering, telling you just what face creams to be shmearing, what pills to take to make the fat go disappearing, why, they’re positively guaranteeing, and absolute everyone’s agreeing, that you’ll be cured of any illness you’re fearing by their feats of medical engineering!

And when we try to truly analyze all that we’ve been hearing, what do you think will come out in the clearing? That they’ve said nooooothing, though all day long they’ve been talking and tonguing.

Here, for instance, listen! Just listen! Two Jews are sitting in a park, and if you listen close, you can hear Nothing sounding from them, quite stark.

“Hello Borekh. How are you doing?”

“What should I be doing, Zorekh? Nothing.”

“And your wife, how is she doing?”

“What should she be doing? Nothing! She’s busy with the Ladies’ Auxiliary.”

“And what are they up to, the ladies?”

“What can ladies be up to? Nothing! They twiddle and they twaddle, and what comes of it? Nooooothing! But enough of that. Why don’t you tell me how you’re doing, Zorekh?”

“Aside from doing up my pants every day? I do pretty much nothing.”

Nu, and your wife?”

“What do you think I see of her? Nothing!”

“What’s she so busy with?”

“With nothing, with, with, with, with gin, with bridge, with poker… Ah, nothing worth mentioning! Eh, better you should tell me, how’s your daughter, um, Paula, doing?”

“Eh, she’s shlepping around with some boy, a real negodyay, as they say in Russian, a scoundrel, a nobody, a nothing!”

“And what does he do?”

“Nothing. Nu, and, and, and, and your Sammy, how’s he doing?”

“Nothing doing. Don’t ask.”

“Nothing has happened, has it, God forbid?”

“No, day and night he’s got his nose in a book. Soon he’ll be finishing college.”

Nu, and what’s the goal, what will he get from all his knowledge?”

“Nothing. For now, I’m afraid to say, nooooothing. But quiet. You, eh, you yourself, Borekh, are you up to anything?”

“Nothing. It’s a while now since I gave up my work finishing garments, and now I’m, eh, thank God, on, on, on, on welfare relief.”

“But tell me, where will that lead?”

“It’s better than nothing, huh? Ha, what do you say?”

“I say: what do you need to have to get this relief?”

“Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Long as you have breath in your lungs, and besides that, nooooothing, ya hear? What you need is nothing!”

“I’ll tell you the truth: if that’s so, I’m a candidate for relief.”

“Nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing is all you can bring along with you to the world to come, anyhow. Let the good-for-nothings be ashamed! Those ones, the ones who rake it in, living the rich life in this rich land, what do you think they deserve? Nothing!”

So there you have it, friends, everything that proves this bit of non-news, that

Toyle erets al-bli-mu” — that the world hangs on nothing. (And back to the chanting tune of learning Torah): That we are tonight: nothing, that we have tonight: nothing, and my entire program tonight: well, it was nothing about nothing!

Because alas, I could do nothing about it, I, Tsvi Hirsh Yoysef, the son of Yankev Mendl Halevi Scooler, your most faithful time-waster, aka, the Rhyme-Meister.
