Mikhl Yashinsky was born in Detroit and educated at Harvard, where he studied modern European history and literature and wrote his thesis about milkmaids. He has directed operas at the Detroit Opera House, starred in Joel Grey’s production of Fiddler on the Roof and the title role of The Sorceress with the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, co-authored the Yiddish Book Center's multimedia Yiddish textbook In eynem, and taught the language at the University of Michigan. In 2019, Yashinsky was named to the Forward 50, the historic newspaper's annual list of “influential, intriguing, and inspiring” American Jews.
