Essays on Yiddishism

Nokhem Shtif

Translation by Maurice Wolfthal

INTRODUCTION

If Nokhem Shtif is remembered at all, it is for his 1924 paper calling for a university-level institution devoted to Ashkenazic culture. In this cultural institution, scholars would enrich the language with neologisms for the twentieth century, Yiddish would be the medium of instruction and research, Yiddish usage and spelling would be standardized, and a generation of Yiddish teachers would be trained. The Yidisher visnshaftlekher institut, better known as YIVO, was born in 1925

But the Oytobiografye fun Nokhem Shtif, published the year he died at age fifty-four, reveals an enormous range of contributions that Shtif had made both to the Jewish question” and to intellectual pursuits. Shtif (1879 – 1933) was an activist; an underground political organizer; a translator of German, Hebrew, and Russian works into Yiddish; an educator; a journalist; a literary critic; a linguist; and a scholar of early Yiddish. He eagerly joined the vigorous debates on Jewish identity, politics, and language. Should Jews stay in anti-Semitic Europe or emigrate to Palestine? If they stayed in Europe, should they strive for equal rights by integrating, dressing like others, sending their children to public schools, and learning the local language? Should they abandon Yiddish or merely use it at home? Should socialist Jews have their own organization or try to join with non-Jews? Should Jews strive for national” autonomy along with other national” minorities whose political and cultural rights were being hotly debated at the Versailles Conference? Or was Europe hopeless, and should Jews learn Hebrew to prepare themselves for creating their own nation state? These are examples of the many political and cultural questions Shtif addressed in his writings.

In Nokhem Shtif’s lifetime, Yiddish was the vernacular of the vast majority of Ashkenazic Jews. In addition to traditional cheders, secular Yiddish schools flourished after World War I, as did competing modern Hebrew-language schools. Shtif received a traditional Jewish education and mastered Hebrew, and he later attended the public Gymnasium in Rivne, the Polytechnic University in Kiev, and the Law School of Yaroslavl. Like others, his views on language and politics evolved through the years. He was eighteen years old when the First Zionist Congress met. He began as a Zionist with the Molodoi Izrael (Young Israel) movement, and he wrote his first propaganda in Russian.

But in 1901 and 1902, Shtif was moved at hearing Sholem Aleichem doing public readings in Yiddish in Kiev. In 1903 the Kishinev pogrom motivated him to organize Jewish self-defense in Kiev and to found the underground Vozrozhdenie (Rebirth). While in exile in Switzerland, Shtif shifted towards the socialist, territorialist, and Yiddishist ideas of Chaim Zhitlowsky. He returned to Russia after the 1905 Revolution and helped found the SERP (Jewish Socialist Party, also known as the Sejmists). In 1917 he helped rejuvenate the Yidishe folks-partey (Jewish People’s Party). He was now writing in Yiddish and promoting the importance of Yiddish.

The tsarist repression that began to mount in 1907 put a damper on Shtif’s political activities; the same year, he seriously perused the old Yiddish and Hebrew manuscripts in the Asiatic Museum of St. Petersburg for the first time, sparking his interest in Yiddish philology and literature. For the next twenty-six years Shtif alternated activism with scholarship, and moved around quite a lot. After World War I he worked with pogrom victims in Kiev at the YEKOPO (Evreiskii Komitet Pomoshchi Zhertvam Voiny, or Jewish Committee for the Relief of War Victims). In 1919 the documentation efforts of three relief agencies joined to form a single Redaktsyons-kolegye oyf zamlen un oysforshn di materyaln vegn di pogromen in Ukrayne (Editorial Board for the Collection and Investigation of Materials Concerning Pogroms in Ukraine), headed by Shtif and Elias Tcherikower (1881 – 1943). In 1921 the Board moved its documents to Berlin for safekeeping and changed its name to the Eastern Jewish Historical Archive (known in German as the Ostjüdisches Historisches Archiv and in Yiddish as the Mizrekh-yidisher historisher arkhiv). This led to Shtif’s book, Pogromen in Ukrayne: Di tsayt fun der frayviliker armey, which was published both in Yiddish and Russian.

Shtif wrote a number of other books, including Pinkes Dashevsky (Chronicle of Dashevsky, London 1903), Humanizm in der elterer yidisher literatur (Humanism in Old Yiddish Literature, Berlin 1922), and Yidishe stilistik (Yiddish Stylistics, Kharkov 1930). He also edited an anthology, Di eltere yidishe literatur (Old Yiddish Literature, Kiev 1929). Dozens of his articles appeared in newspapers and scholarly journals, including Yevreyskaya Zhizn (Jewish Life, St. Petersburg), Der fraynd (The Friend, St. Petersburg), Dos naye lebn (The New Life, New York), Der pinkes: Yorbukh far der geshikhte fun der yidisher literatur un shprakh, far folklor, kritik, un bibliografye (The Chronicle: Almanac of the history of Yiddish Literature, Language, Folklore, Criticism, and Bibliography, Vilna), Di shtime, Di folks-shtime, Folksblat, Tsaytshrift (The Voice, The People’s Voice, People’s Page, Magazine, Minsk), Yidish (Yiddish, Vilna and Warsaw), Di yidishe velt (The Jewish World, Vilna), Yidishe filologye (Yiddish Philology, Warsaw), and Di yidishe shprakh (The Yiddish Language), which Shtif edited in Kiev upon his return from Berlin.

The Bolsheviks had initiated a broad program of state funding of Yiddish language, literature, scholarship, newspapers, and theater. Drawn by the official Soviet ideology of socialism and the equality of nationalities,” and by the initial official embrace of Yiddish culture, Shtif accepted a position in the Department of Jewish Culture of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. But he clashed increasingly with Stalin’s censors, and the Soviets forced him to publicly recant his political errors” before he died.

In his Oytobiografye (Autobiography), Shtif relates that he wrote Yidn un yidish in 1918 during the great famine in St. Petersburg. It was published in Kiev in 1919, then in Warsaw in 1920. Shtif was very aware that Jewish delegates at the Versailles Conference were hoping that the Minorities Treaties and the League of Nations would protect the national” rights of Jews in central and eastern Europe. The pogroms in Poland and Ukraine, and efforts to bar Jews from professions and universities, made Shtif all the more anxious to see that the rights of Jews — both political and cultural — were recognized. The following excerpts offer a sampling of Shtif’s thinking on the issues facing Jews at the time.

Foreword

Jews have spoken Yiddish for centuries; they enjoyed life and they worried in Yiddish. They did business and traveled in Yiddish; they settled all over the world with Yiddish. Mothers sang their kids to sleep in Yiddish with “Under Little Sarah’s Cradle.” 1 1Unter sorele’s vigele, a folksong, see Ruth Rubin, Voices of a People: The Story of Yiddish Folksong, New York: McGraw-Hill, 1973. They studied in Yiddish in traditional primary schools, in religious academies, in synagogues and little prayer houses. They translated the Torah and other holy books into Yiddish. It was in Yiddish that the rabbis and the sages taught the people about the Torah and the right way to live. It was in Yiddish that our books of ethics were written. Our mothers—half of the Jewish people—read the five books of Moses in the Yiddish Tsene-rene. And they offered their heartfelt prayers, their tkhines, in Yiddish.

In short, Jews have lived their entire lives in Yiddish, and it never occurred to anyone to ask whether that was all right, whether Yiddish was indeed our language, whether we really should have a different language altogether. Of course Yiddish! What else? Of course Jews can live fully and completely in the tongue that they have been speaking for generations and generations, and that all Jews understand! Would it make any sense to ask, for example: is it right for people to walk on their feet, do things with their hands, look with their eyes? Well, of course it’s right! It’s nature’s way. So it’s no wonder that Jews never asked such a crazy question. They took care of themselves, and they did it in their own language, Yiddish.

And Yiddish opened up the world to them. For instance, did Jews know much about the world before there were Yiddish newspapers? Only when newspapers and books about contemporary life started being printed in Yiddish, could Jews know what was happening in politics and commerce, how Jews were faring in other lands, what was the state of international relations, and in general, what was happening on the planet. They could now find out what the world expected of them and what their status was, how business was going and how their spirituality was faring. What should Jews be asking for? What should they do to stop being mistreated? How could they improve their lot, and so forth?

In other words, Yiddish linked and connected Jews to other Jews and to the world, just as every other language does for its speakers, and thereby provides a people with the means to keep up with global happenings. And that was how our little Jewish society lived, as it always has, and never thought it should be any other way. How strange it must seem to normal, everyday Jews to suddenly be hearing in recent years about Yiddishists and Hebraists and the “conflict” between them that is raging in our traditional schools, secular schools, Jewish community councils, and education associations! What are Jews to think when Hebraists try to convince them that Yiddish isn’t a language, but just a jargon, an embarrassment, something to be gotten rid of as soon as possible? What are they to think when they hear the Hebraists in an uproar, saying that Yiddishists wish to erase our entire past, together with the Torah and our good old Jewish religion, and all but lead us down the path to conversion? And that they, the Hebraists, are the ones who will save the Jewish people? And that suddenly all Jewish children will be speaking Hebrew fluently? And that they, the Hebraists, will implant in us a new, pure, Hebraist soul?

So we need to explain clearly—so that everyone understands—what exactly Yiddishists are, why they are being decried as traitors, what their thinking is, and what they want. And also, just what are Hebraists? Of what sins do they accuse the Yiddishists? And what are their objectives? These questions need to be brought down from the lofty realm of partisanship to the realm of common sense. That way we can all understand what the issues are, and we can decide for ourselves what needs to be done.

How did the “Yiddishists” originate? 2 2 p. 8

How did the “Yiddishists” originate? How did things get to such a state that Yiddish, the language of our people for at least a thousand long years, actually required a “party” of its own—a faction of its own—to defend it? Indeed, who is attacking the Yiddish language, so that it needs to have defenders? And where are all the Jews who should have a say in this matter?

Here is the answer to these questions: “Yiddishists” came into existence, because there were anti-Yiddishists before them: assimilationists and Hebraists. Yiddishists came into being, because for quite some time now, a number of Jews—in particular educated, enlightened Jews—had been mercilessly persecuting Yiddish, wishing to uproot the language from its people. But they didn’t ask the people, and the people had no say in it. So naturally there were those who stood up for the nation and its language. And those were the “Yiddishists.”

The Maskilim

Enmity toward Yiddish among some intelligent, well-educated Jews did not start yesterday. It has been around for several decades. The first to throw stones and to denigrate our national language with the insulting term “jargon” were the maskilim in the days of Tsar Nicholas I. 3 3 1796–1855, tsar from 1825–1855 They did it not because they were the enemies of our people, but out of love and devotion. Their purpose, their objective, was no doubt well-meaning. Only they went about it the wrong way. They wished to make Jews respectable. They wanted our people to be equal to the other nations. [...]

So vehement was the maskilim’s rejection of Yiddish, so strong was their belief that the doors to education and knowledge—and to the whole world—would open to us only through Russian or Polish, so denigrated was Yiddish, that the people felt themselves degraded by their language and did not manage to defend it. [...]

The New-fangled Nationalists and Zionists 4 4 p. 21

Those maskilim distanced themselves from Jews for the sake of a larger, more beautiful world. But now, on the contrary, they suddenly reject the world. . . . [According to them,] Everyone still hates us. The whole world denigrates us. And it will stay that way generation after generation. There is only one solution: give in to our enemies, run away, and save Judaism. And where can Judaism be better saved than in the land of Israel?[...]

What do the “Yiddishists” want? 5 5 p. 25

We need contemporary folks-shuln where Jewish children can develop their minds and their sensibilities, their bodies and souls, and where they can learn what is most essential: reading, writing, arithmetic, and a knowledge of the world (geography, history, biology, etc.).

All education in the Yiddish folkshul, every conversation between teacher and child, in short, everything must be carried out in the children’s mother tongue, Yiddish. We do not need to adopt a foreign language. . . . Why? Because Yiddish is no worse than any other language. Can we not speak, write, think, and feel in Yiddish as well as in any other language? . . . Can it be said that Jews who speak only Yiddish are insufficiently equipped to express the most profound thoughts, the loftiest sentiments? [...]

Children, even at the age of five or six, come to school with a vast treasure of knowledge, feeling, and experience, which they bring from home and from the street, profoundly ingrained in their hearts and minds. Children not only speak, but think and feel in their own language, their mother tongue. In short, children are a small world unto themselves, and it is the teacher’s task to broaden, refine, and deepen that world.

What do the Hebraists claim? 6 6 p. 45

“Yiddishists” are modern people who want to breathe a modern spirit into Jewish education, but they want to do it the old-fashioned Jewish way: by teaching in the language that the child understands, the mother tongue: Yiddish.

But here come the Hebraists, who deny this categorically, insisting that two times two equals five, meaning: children should be taught not in Yiddish, the language that they understand, but rather in the holy language, a language that they do not understand. The whole world believes that it is good to raise and educate children in their mother tongue, but we Jews think exactly the opposite.

The Hebraists maintain, first of all, that Yiddish should not be used for teaching because it is not a language but a “jargon,” a corrupted foreign language. That is the most idiotic argument in the world. No one asks the lineage of a language, any more than one asks what a mother’s yikhes is. No nation chooses what language it wants any more than a child chooses its mother. It was neither by accident nor by evil intent that Jews forgot the holy language and adopted another language. Circumstances demanded it. Our ancestors could not have done otherwise. Not only in the diaspora, as the Zionists and Hebraists would have us believe, but they also stopped speaking the holy language in their own land, the Land of Israel. For hundreds of years, in the time of the Second Temple, the Jews in the Land of Israel itself were speaking Aramaic. But Yiddish—the Old German language that we now speak, write, think, and feel—has been a language of the Jews for a thousand years.

What exactly is autonomy? 7 7 p. 77

In our times it has become an important principle that, just as every individual in a country has political rights, so, too, should every nationality in a country. Political freedom for individuals is no longer sufficient, because individuals are not only residents of the country, but first of all members of a nationality. Jews are Russian citizens of the country Russia, like Russians, Poles, Ukrainians, and others. Jews are Polish citizens of the country Poland, like Poles and Germans. But Jews are still Jews, meaning: they are a nationality with its own history, its own religion and customs, its own language, its own suffering and joys, its own needs and desires. This is also true of every other nationality that lives in a country inhabited not by one nationality, but by several (like Russia and Poland, for example). [...]

Let us imagine that every cultural group in Russia, for example, or Poland, obtains national autonomy. That means that every citizen of Russia will be assigned to some nationality. . . . When national autonomy becomes a reality, public schools in the city of Minsk, let’s say, won’t just be public schools; they’ll be Belarusian schools, Russian schools, Ukrainian schools. . . . Each nationality will have its own schools for its children. All of them will have equal rights as government schools, and the Minsk City Hall will have to fund each nationality to maintain its schools based on the number of children. But who will make schools for Jewish children and who will maintain them if Jews are not a nationality and don’t have their own national autonomy? No one! Jewish children will be orphans!

Conclusion 8 8 p. 111

We have considered Yiddish from various points of view: its value in Jewish schools, its value to Jews in general, to Jewish national autonomy, and to peaceful coexistence with our neighbors of other nationalities. We have come to the conclusion that Yiddish, the national language of the Jews, must take its rightful place of honor. Jews must realize this for themselves and clearly explain to the world that Yiddish is their language, that they hold fast to it and demand the same respect and rights for it as for all other languages.
