איך מוז זיך מודה זײַן אַז איך לײג אַ סך אָפּ אױף שפּעטער. צו מאָל אָבער זענען די אױסקומען פֿון מײַן דעם אָפּלײגן אױף שפּעטער גאָר ניצלעך. איך האָב ליב צו שאַפֿן מאַטעריאַלן װאָס קענען צו נוץ קומען אין ייִדיש־לערערײַ. איך שאַף זײ פֿאַר זיך אַלײן אָבער אױך פֿאַר אַלע אַנדערע ייִדיש־לערערקעס און ־לערערס. מײַן ערשטער פּראָיעקט איז געװען אַן אינדעקס צו "דעם ייִדישן טעם־טעם" – אַ רשימה פֿון אַלע אַרטיקלען װאָס זענען געדרוקט געוואָרן אין דעם פּעריאָדישן בלעטל פֿאַר ייִדיש־לערנערס וואָס פֿלעגט אַרױסגײן אין פּאַריזער ייִדיש־צענטער – מעדעם ביבליאָטעק צווישן די יאָרן 1995 – 2017.
מײַן צװײטער פּראָיעקט איז אַ גוגל־קאַלענדאַר מיט דאַטעס װאָס זענען װיכטיק פֿאַר דער ייִדישער שפּראַך און ליטעראַטור. מע געפֿינט דאָרט געבױרנטעג און יאָרצײַטן פֿון מענטשן װאָס האָבן געשריבן אין ייִדיש און װעגן ייִדיש. מע זעט אױך װען עס איז אַרויס דער ערשטער נומער פֿון פֿאַרשיידענע באַקאַנטע ייִדישע צײַטונגען, װען מע האָט געגרינדעט אָרגאַניזאַציעס װי ייִװאָ, צישאָ אָדער דער בונד, און דאַטעס פֿאַרבונדן מיט אַנדערע װיכטיקע געשעענישן. אין דער באַשרײַבונג פֿון יעדער דאַטע גיב איך אָן דאָס יאָר אין װעלכן עפּעס איז געשען (אַ דאַנק דוד פֿאָרמאַנען פֿאַרן געדאַנק) – מע קען אָבער, צום באַדױערן, נישט זען מיט װיפֿל יאָר צוריק עס זענען געשען די זאַכן, מע דאַרף אַלע מאָל אַלײן צײלן.
איך מוז דאָ באַמערקן נאָך אַ פּאָר באַגרענעצונגען פֿון דעם קאַלענדאַר. קודם־כּל, פֿעלן אַ טײל באַקאַנטע פֿיגורן פֿון דער ייִדיש־װעלט, װײַל מע קען נישט די גענױע דאַטעס פֿון זײערע געבױרנטעג און/אָדער יאָרטעג. צװײטנס, דאַרף מען האַלטן אין זינען אַז אַלע דאַטעס װערן אָנגעגעבן לױטן גרעגאָראַנישן קאַלענדאַר. סוף־כּל־סוף איז דער קאַלענדאַר װײַט נישט פֿולשטענדיק – אױב איר האָט פֿאָרלײגן פֿון דאַטעס צוצוגעבן (און אױב איר באַמערקט טעותים), זײַט אַזױ גוט און שיקט מיר אַ בליצבריװ ([email protected]).
װי אַזױ קען מען אױסניצן דעם קאַלענדאַר?
װען איך האָב אָנגעהױבן שאַפֿן דעם קאַלענדאַר, בין איך נישט געװען זיכער צי ער װעט טאַקע זײַן ניצלעך, אָבער פֿאָרט באַשלאָסן אים צו שאַפֿן און זען װאָס װעט אַרױסקומען פֿון דעם. שױן אַ יאָר װאָס איך האָב אים און נישט נאָר קומט ער מיר אַ מאָל צו נוץ, נאָר אױך אַנדערע לערערס און לערערקעס באַניצן זיך מיט אים צומאָל (און איך שטעל זיך פֿאָר אַז די װאָס לערנען נישט ייִדיש אָבער זײַנען פֿאַראינטערעסירט אין דער שפּראַך קענען אױך אױסניצן צוטריט צו אַזאַ קאַלענדאַר).
מיר העלפֿט ער אַרײַנצוברענגען אין קלאַס מער פֿון דער ייִדישער קולטור – בפֿרט פֿאַר אָנהײבערס, װאָס לײענען נאָך נישט קײן ליטעראַטור אױף ייִדיש (אַ חוץ לידער): זײ זענען דאָך געװײנטלעך פֿאַראינטערעסירט אין איר. אַ מאָל האָב איך, למשל, אױסגעניצט חװה ראָזענפֿאַרבס געבױרנטאָג אױף צו זאָגן אַ פּאָר װערטער װעגן איר און װײַזן איר פֿאָטאָגראַפֿיע אַ גרופּע אָנהײבערס. איך האָב נישט געהאַט קײן סך צײַט אױף דעם, האָב איך זיי נאָך דער לעקציע געשיקט אַן אַרטיקל װעגן איר, באַפּוצט מיט רעקאָרדירונגען (אױף ענגליש) און אַ רעקאָרדירונג פֿון איר טאָכטער גאָלדי מאָרגענטאַלערס פֿאָרלײענונג פֿון איר ליד (אין אָריגינאַל און און איבערגעזעצט אױף ייִדיש). אַזױ אַרום, האָט זיך די גרופּע דערװוּסט אַ ביסל װעגן דער באַקאַנטער שרײַבערין. אױב מײַן טעלעפֿאָן װאָלט מיר נישט אָנגעזאָגט, אַז חװה ראָזענפֿאַרב איז געבױרן געװאָרן דעם 9טן פֿעברואַר, װאָלט איך זי זיכער נישט דערמאָנט אין דעם קורס.
מע קען, פֿאַרשטײט זיך, רעדן װעגן ראָזענפֿאַרבן װען מע װיל, נאָר לױט מײַן דערפֿאַרונג שאַפֿט אַזאַ שמועס דעם זעלבן טאָג װען זי איז געבױרן געװאָרן אַ געפֿיל פֿון פֿאַרבינדונג. עס גיט אונדז אַ סיבה צו רעדן װעגן איר דװקא דעם טאָג (לױט מיר איז װיכטיק תּלמידים און תּלמידות זאָלן װיסן פֿאַר װאָס מע טוט װאָס מע טוט). און פֿאַרקערט – װען מע װײס נישט װאָס צו טאָן, קען מען אַ קוק טאָן אין דעם קאַלענדאַר און זוכן אינספּיראַציע.
אָט זענען אַ פּאָר פֿאָרלײגן – טײל האָב איך אַלײן אױסגעפּרוּװט און אַנדערע – נאָך נישט. אַװדאי דאַרף מען צופּאַסן די מאַטעריאַלן און געניטונגען צו יעדער דאַטע און צו װיפֿל צײַט מע האָט פֿאַר דעם בשעת דער לעקציע.

װי קען מען צוגעבן דעם קאַלענדאַר צו גוגל־קאַלענדאַרן בײַ זיך?
1. קװעטשט דאָ (אױף װיפֿל איך װײס דאַרף מען דאָס טאָן אױפֿן קאָמפּיוטער, אָבער עס װעט זיך אױך באַווײַזן אין אַפּליקאַציע אױפֿן טעלעפֿאָן שפּעטער)
2. עס װעט זיך עפֿענען דער גוגל־קאַלענדאַר מיט אַ קלײן פֿענצטערל. איר דאַרפֿט קװעטשן "צוגעבן".
3. אױב איר װילט באַקומען אײַנשטעלונגען: קװעטשט אױף די דרײַ פּינטעלעך לעבן דעם נאָמען פֿונעם קאַלענדאַר און קלײַבט אױס "פֿיקסירונגען"
4. אין דער סעקציע "אײַנשטעלונגען װעגן געשעענישן" גיט צו די אײַנשטעלונגען. איר קענט אױסקלײַבן װי לאַנג פֿאַר די געשעענישן איר װילט זען די אײַנשטעלונגען און אױב איר װילט זײ באַקומען דורך בליצפּאָסט.

איך האָף אַז עס װעט אײַך צו נוץ קומען!

I have to admit that I often procrastinate. But sometimes the results of my procrastination are quite useful. I like creating materials that can be helpful for Yiddish teachers. I create them for myself but also for all other Yiddish teachers. My first project was creating an Index to the Der Yidisher Tam Tam, a list of articles that were printed in the Parisian journal for Yiddish students. It used to be published by the Paris Yiddish Center - Medem Library from 1995-2017.
My second project is a Google calendar with dates that are important for Yiddish language and literature. There you can find birthdays and death dates of people who wrote in Yiddish and about Yiddish. You can also see there when the first number of different famous Yiddish papers was published; when organizations like YIVO, TSISHO or the Bund were founded; and dates connected to other important events. In the description of every date I add the year in which something happened (thank you to David Forman for the idea). But you can’t, unfortunately, see how many years ago something happened – you always have to count yourself.
I also have to note a few other limitations of the calendar. First of all, some famous figures from the Yiddish world are missing because we don’t know their exact birth or death dates. Secondly, you have to remember that all dates are listed according to the Gregorian calendar. How can you use the calendar?
When I began to create the calendar I wasn’t so sure it was actually useful. But still, I decided to make it and to see what would happen. It’s been a year that I’ve used it and not only is it helpful, but other teachers use it too sometimes (and I imagine that those who aren’t teaching Yiddish but are interested in the language can make use of such a calendar too).
The calendar helps me to bring more Yiddish culture to class, especially in beginner’s classes where we don’t yet read Yiddish literature (except some poems): these students are usually interested in the culture. One time, for example, I used Chava Rosenfarb’s birthday as an opportunity to say a few words about her and to show a photo of her to a group of beginners. I didn’t have a lot of time for it, so after the lesson I sent them an article about her together with recordings of her (in English) and a recording of her daughter Goldie Morgenthaler’s recital of her poem (in the original and translated to Yiddish). In that manner the group learned a little bit about the famous writer. If my phone hadn’t alerted me that it was Chava Rosenfarb’s birthday on February 9th, I surely wouldn’t have mentioned her in the class.
Of course you can talk about Rosenfarb whenever you want, but in my experience a conversation on the same day as her birthday creates a sense of connection. It gives us a reason to speak about her on that day specifically (in my opinion it’s important that students know why we do what we do in class). And the opposite is true too: If you don’t know what to do in class, you can take a look at the calendar and look for information.
Here are some suggestions – some of which I have tried, some of which I haven’t tried. Of course you have to adapt the materials and exercises to every date and according to how much time you have for this activity during class.
You can, for example:
- Show photographs
- Show title pages of books
- Say a few words about a person, a newspaper, an institution or event (or ask students to prepare something about them in advance)
- Send materials about the people, newspapers, organizations, events after class
- Read poems, short stories, fragments, and longer texts relating to the topic
- Listen to songs
- Listen to recordings by writers who read aloud their own work
- Listen to recordings in which the person, newspapers, institution, or event is the topic
- Practice reading dates
- Sing “Tsu dayn geburtstog” for the person in question (Thank you to Adrien Smith for the idea!)
How can I add the Google Calendar to my own calendar?
Step 1: Click here (as far as I know you have to do this on your computer but it will later show up on your phone in the app too).
Step 2: A Google Calendar with a small pop-up window will open. You have to click “Add”.
Step 3: If you want to see the settings: Click on the three dots next to the name of the calendar and choose “settings”.
Step 4: In the section “Event notifications” click “Add notification”. You can choose how long before the events you want a reminder and whether you’d like to receive it by email. (I decided I want to see the events two days before the date in order to have time to prepare something for my class, if I want to).
