YIVO-Bard Uriel Weinreich Summer Program in Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture (Remote/Online)

Dates: June 21 - July 30, with an optional refresher course taking place June 14-18, and a continuing education course for those teaching, researching, or performing in Yiddish from August 2-13

Description: A joint program led by YIVO and Bard College, the Uriel Weinreich Summer Program is an immersive Yiddish language experience with a wide offering of cultural and enrichment opportunities

Description: Now in its fourth decade, the Steiner Summer Yiddish Program offers motivated students, ages 18-26, the opportunity to immerse themselves in Yiddish language and culture. Participants study with renowned scholars and build a community of yidishkayt in a supportive residential (or online!) setting. Students take a full year of language courses in seven weeks and take part in seminars with leading scholars of literature, film, music, and history. They also attend the Yiddish Book Center’s Yidstock: The Festival of New Yiddish Music and can participate in paid internships.

Description: The Workers Circle provides one-of-a-kind classes to improve your Yiddish, expand your knowledge of Yiddish history and culture, as well as give you time to learn and grow from distinguished experts in Yiddish studies. There are workshops and classes offered on all subjects, from Yiddish grammar to song, to autobiography and dialectology.

Cost: In 2020, the Trip to Yiddishland prices ranged from 350-1400 USD per person (290.5-1162 EUR, 446-1785 CAD) depending on housing choice (many options available from dormitory to private lakefront and lawn rooms). Also, University students were able to register with shared accomodations for 325 USD (270 EUR, 414 CAD). Cost includes meals, programs, and entertainment.

Description: The Trip to Yiddishland features four levels of Yiddish classes, dance & klezmer instruction, theater & music workshops, concerts & entertainment, children’s program, and more.

Description: Full immersion courses in Yiddish Culture, Song, and Dance for people of all ages and backgrounds from beginner to advanced. Organized under a faculty of Yiddish teachers and artists, it is “the only opportunity in the UK to immerse yourself in the deep and inspiring world of Yiddish culture”

The 19th International Summer Seminar in Yiddish Language and Culture (Warsaw, Poland)

Cost: For the full seminar program (language course and all activities), tuition costs range from 650 USD/600 EUR for the 3 week program, 490 USD/450 EUR for the 2 week program. Description: The Shalom Foundation and the Center for Yiddish Culture invite all Yiddish lovers to a three-week virtual meeting with Yiddish language and with Jewish history, literature, culture and art, which will take place both in class and online. In addition to language classes students will also take part in a number of conversation tutorials, workshops and lectures - all in the heart of Warsaw’s Muranow neighobrhood!

The 10th Summer Program for Yiddish Language and Literature Paris Yiddish Center – Medem Library (online/Paris, France)

Description: For three weeks, the Paris Yiddish Center hosts students from all around the world in the heart of Paris, offering a rich program of language courses and cultural activities under the pedagogical direction of Yitskhok Niborski. The workshops, conferences and film screenings enable students to strengthen their Yiddish language skills while connecting with other Yiddishists from all over the world.

Cost: TBD. Azrieli Scholarships are available for emerging artists and scholars ages 16-35, which will provide generously subsidised tuition for all successful applicants. A limited number of free or pay-what-you-can registrations will also be available, designated for those with financial hardship or who come from communities traditionally underrepresented at our programs.

Levels: Introductory, intermediate, advanced, as well as other classes, lectures, and other activities conducted in Yiddish.

Cultural Component: KlezKanada’s Summer Retreat is a week-long immersion in Yiddish culture, arts, and music attended by an international and intergenerational community every year. In addition to Yiddish language programming, KlezKanada is centered around intensive instrumental and vocal workshops in klezmer and Yiddish music, as well as classes in Yiddish dance, theater, and visual arts, and lectures and film screenings in topics related to Jewish history, literature, and culture. In the afternoons and evenings, there are concerts featuring some of the world’s best klezmer bands, and a late night cabaret. In 2021, the Retreat will be a hybrid program with almost all activities taking place online and with some aspects of the programming taking place in Montreal as the public health situation allows.

This is an opportunity in the UK to immerse yourself in the deep and inspiring world of Yiddish Song for a whole week with interesting and like-minded people of all ages and from all backgrounds.
